Having temporarily moved into my aunt and uncle’s home, this video is informed by my relationship with their cat, Hazel, as well as academic texts on cat behaviour and human-cat relationships and their effects on human psychology. I showcase my experiences living with a cat that does not belong to me, and the ensuing interactions because of my unavoidable invasion of her space. The work is edited in an informal “meme” style in reference to the “internet cat video” genre. This was done in response to my research on the effects of cat videos on the human psyche which suggest that they can boost viewer’s energy and positive emotions. I have transformed a negative experience (living anxiously in a new environment with a cat who openly distains me) into various memes and cute moments, creating a lighthearted, happy cat video. Often, it is negative emotions and experiences that get highlighted in art, so through this work I present a beacon of happiness.
